Product information
Pinus mugo ‘Mops’ is one of the toughest and most popular dwarf pines we grow on the nursery. It forms a neat, bun-shaped mound of tightly packed branches, giving it a really satisfying, solid appearance in the garden. The needles are a rich, dark green for most of the year, with new growth in spring showing a silvery-green sheen. Some sources suggest the needles can take on a yellowish or golden hue in winter.
This is a very slow-growing conifer, eventually reaching around a metre in height and spread after many years. It’s not fussy about soil type, as long as it’s well-drained, and it performs best in full sun. It’s incredibly hardy, tolerating freezing temperatures, exposed sites, and even a bit of drought once it’s established.
You’ll rarely need to do any pruning; its shape is naturally dense and compact. If you do want to keep it extra tight, you can trim back some of the new shoots in spring. It’s a superb choice for low-maintenance gardens, providing a solid green anchor in rockeries, borders, or containers.
