Prunus ‘Candy Floss’ is one of those flowering cherries that stops you in your tracks. It produces huge, fluffy-looking double pink flowers in May, each with delicately fringed petals. [3, 4, 7, 8] The flowers have a soft, velvety texture and they appear at the same time as the young leaves, which emerge a handsome coppery-bronze colour. [3, 7, 8, 12]
This is a fairly vigorous tree with a vase-shaped, spreading habit. [3, 4, 5] It will happily grow to around 5 or 6 metres tall, making it a good choice for many gardens. [5, 8] For the best flower display and autumn colour, plant it in full sun and well-drained soil. [8] It’s a tolerant plant and will manage in most soils, including clay and chalk. [8]
Like most ornamental cherries, it needs very little pruning. Just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches after it has finished flowering in summer. [14] It’s a reliable choice for a low-maintenance feature tree, and the blossom is always popular with early bees visiting the nursery. [3]
