Product information
We’ve grown grapes on the nursery for years, and a seedless variety is always a popular choice for eating straight from the vine. The large, lobed leaves provide a lush green backdrop through the summer, creating welcome shade over a pergola or softening a sunny wall. In early summer, small and discreet greenish flowers appear, which then develop into bunches of fruit.
This is a fast-growing, deciduous climber that can reach a height of 8 metres or more, but is easily kept smaller with pruning. It thrives in a spot with full sun in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Good air circulation is important, so a south or west-facing aspect is ideal to help ripen the fruit.
The key to a good crop is all in the pruning. It’s best to prune in mid-winter when the plant is fully dormant, as the sap can ‘bleed’ at other times. Cut back the main stems and shorten side shoots to encourage fruiting wood for next year’s harvest. It’s a satisfying job for a quiet winter’s day.
