Acer palmatum ‘Firecracker’

‘Firecracker’ is a standout among the dissectum maples for its ability to hold its rich colour throughout the season. The feathery, lace-like leaves emerge a bright ruby red in spring before deepening to a dark burgundy-purple. We often recommend this variety to visitors looking for a classic Japanese garden look. The finely divided foliage creates a delicate, airy texture.

This slow-growing shrub eventually forms a mounded, arching dome about 4 metres high. It prefers partial shade where the soil stays moist but well-drained. While it can tolerate full sun, the fine leaves may scorch in very hot positions. We find it performs best in a sheltered corner away from cold, drying winds. These winds can damage the soft new growth.

Minimal effort is required to keep it looking its best. You only need to remove any dead or crossing branches in late autumn or midwinter. It is an excellent choice for a large container or as a specimen plant near a pond. We have seen it used to great effect in our own display areas where its arching branches soften stone paths.
