Product information
Clematis ‘Multi Blue’ is a firm favourite here at Tandee Nursery, and it’s easy to see why. This early large-flowered hybrid is incredibly glamorous, producing a profusion of stunning, fully double flowers, each a generous 10-15cm across. The deep blue petals unfurl to reveal fascinating silvery-blue central tepals that gradually expand, creating a delightful multi-layered effect – quite unlike anything else. We’ve observed its vigorous yet compact habit, making it a fantastic choice for adding vertical interest without overwhelming smaller spaces.
For the best performance, we recommend planting ‘Multi Blue’ in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade, ensuring its ‘head is in the sun and feet in the shade’ – keeping the roots cool and moist is key. It thrives in fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. While it tolerates occasional dry spells once established, consistent moisture is appreciated, especially during warmer periods. Mulching around the base will help retain moisture and keep those roots happy.
As a Pruning Group 2 clematis, ‘Multi Blue’ offers two waves of blooms: a magnificent first flush in late spring to early summer, followed by a reliable second display in late summer to early autumn. We lightly prune in late winter or early spring, removing any weak or damaged stems and trimming back to a healthy bud to encourage strong new growth. After the first flush of flowers, a second light prune can stimulate even more blooms. It’s perfect for training up arbours, fences, or obelisks, and looks particularly striking when allowed to weave through shrubs with contrasting golden or variegated foliage. It’s also a magnet for butterflies and bees, adding extra life and movement to your garden.
