Clematis ‘Miss Bateman’

‘Miss Bateman’ holds a special place in our hearts here at Tandee Nursery, having been a garden favourite for over 150 years – a true testament to its enduring beauty and reliability. This free-flowering, deciduous climber presents an exquisite display of large, satin-white flowers, up to 15cm across, from late spring into early summer. Each bloom features a subtle green stripe on the reverse of its rounded petals, which fades as it matures, and is dramatically highlighted by a central flourish of rich, burgundy-red anthers. It’s a remarkably robust and bushy clematis, providing excellent coverage and often rewarding us with a lighter second flush of flowers later in the season.

For best results, we recommend planting ‘Miss Bateman’ in a moisture-retentive, well-drained soil, ideally with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. While it thrives with its ‘head in the sun’, it appreciates its roots being kept cool and shaded; a layer of mulch or companion planting at its base works wonderfully. This hardy clematis is suitable for most of the UK, coping well with temperatures down to -15°C to -20°C, and can be grown in full sun to partial shade, making it wonderfully versatile for various garden aspects.

As a Pruning Group 2 clematis, ‘Miss Bateman’ benefits from a light prune in late winter or early spring; simply remove any dead or weak stems and cut the remaining ones back to the highest pair of strong-growing buds. After its magnificent first flush of flowers, a further light prune will often encourage a welcome second display. We love to train this clematis up walls, fences, and obelisks, or allow it to gracefully scramble through larger shrubs. Its elegant white flowers combine beautifully with roses or other climbers, adding a touch of classic sophistication to any garden space.
