Jasminum officinale

*Jasminum officinale*, commonly known as Common or Poet’s Jasmine, is a true garden classic, cherished for its incredible fragrance and elegant climbing habit. We’ve grown this vigorous deciduous climber for years at Tandee Nursery, and it consistently rewards us with masses of pure white, star-shaped flowers. It creates a lush backdrop of mid-green, pinnate foliage, providing a beautiful display throughout the growing season. Its intoxicating perfume, particularly noticeable on warm evenings, is what truly sets it apart, inviting a host of pollinators to your garden.

For the best performance, we recommend planting Common Jasmine in a warm, sheltered spot that receives full sun to partial shade; while it tolerates some shade, more sun will encourage a more prolific flowering display. It thrives in fertile, well-drained soil, but is adaptable to a range of soil types from acidic to alkaline, as long as drainage is good. Water regularly during its establishment period and throughout dry spells, especially if grown in containers, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. It’s generally hardy across most of the UK (H5, hardy to -15°C to -10°C), though protection in particularly cold or exposed areas may be beneficial in severe winters.

Pruning is best carried out just after flowering, in late summer or early autumn, to maintain its shape and encourage new growth for the following season. Simply cut back flowered stems to a strong side-shoot and remove any weak, damaged, or crossing growth. This versatile climber is perfect for training over pergolas, arches, trellises, or against a sunny wall, making it a superb choice for cottage gardens, city courtyards, or sensory gardens where its fragrance can be fully appreciated. Its nectar-rich blooms are a magnet for bees and butterflies, adding extra life and movement to your summer garden.
