Clematis ‘Boulivard Samaritan Jo’

Clematis ‘Boulevard Samaritan Jo’ is a standout from the renowned Boulevard® series, bred for its exceptional free-flowering nature and compact habit. This makes it a superb choice for gardeners looking for maximum impact in a smaller space. We’re consistently impressed by its prolific display of large, star-shaped flowers, featuring pristine silvery-white petals beautifully outlined with a distinct purple margin, all centred around striking yellow anthers. It’s truly a delight that keeps on giving, blooming from late spring right through to early autumn.

For optimal performance, we recommend planting ‘Samaritan Jo’ in a rich, moist, and well-drained soil, ideally with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. While it tolerates full sun, the ethereal bloom colours are often best preserved in a spot that receives some partial or dappled shade, especially in the afternoon. Crucially, like many clematis, it appreciates having its roots kept cool and shaded; a good layer of mulch or companion planting at its base works a treat. Regular watering is important, particularly during dry spells, to ensure a continuous floral show.

As a Pruning Group 3 clematis, ‘Samaritan Jo’ is wonderfully easy to care for. We simply advise a hard prune in early spring, cutting back all stems to a strong pair of buds about 30cm (12 inches) above ground level. This encourages vigorous new growth and ensures a spectacular flush of flowers all along the stems. Its compact, twining habit makes it ideal for training up a small trellis, obelisk, or through a shrub in a mixed border. It’s also a brilliant candidate for containers on patios and balconies, where its long-lasting blooms can be admired up close, attracting bees and hummingbirds to your garden.
