Parthenocissus henryana

We’ve long admired Parthenocissus henryana, often known as Chinese Virginia Creeper or Silvervein Creeper, for its exceptional foliage and more manageable nature compared to its larger cousins. This vigorous, self-clinging deciduous climber truly shines with its deeply divided, velvety green leaves, each exquisitely patterned with prominent silver-white and pink veins. We often observe new growth emerging with a beautiful burgundy flush, adding another layer of interest. It’s deservedly an RHS Award of Garden Merit recipient, a testament to its garden-worthy qualities.

For the best display, we recommend planting Parthenocissus henryana in a position from full sun to partial shade; while it tolerates full shade, the autumn colour is most vibrant in sunnier spots, although the delicate silver veining is more pronounced in dappled shade. It’s not overly particular about soil, thriving in most moderately fertile, well-drained conditions, even tolerating sand and clay, but we always advise enriching the soil with some organic matter before planting. Once established, it’s quite hardy and adaptable, needing only occasional watering during dry spells, though regular watering helps it settle in quickly.

This beautiful creeper requires minimal fuss once it’s settled. We recommend a light prune in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or misplaced stems and to keep its growth in check, especially if it’s nearing gutters or windows. A summer trim can also encourage an even better autumn colour. In spring, you’ll see those lovely new leaves unfurl, leading to the striking veined foliage through summer. Autumn is when it truly takes centre stage, with leaves transforming into a spectacular array of brilliant reds and reddish-purples, often followed by small blue-black berries. It’s perfect for covering north or east-facing walls, trellises, or fences, bringing year-round interest and a touch of sophisticated drama to any garden, particularly where space is a consideration.
