Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’

Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’ is a classic and much-loved deciduous fig, renowned for its hardiness and consistent fruiting in British gardens. It forms a large, spreading shrub or small tree with bold, deeply lobed, dark green leaves that bring a wonderful Mediterranean feel to any space. We’ve found it to be exceptionally vigorous and easy to grow, often producing fruit within its first season after planting, making it a very rewarding choice for both seasoned gardeners and beginners alike.

For the best crops, we recommend planting ‘Brown Turkey’ in full sun, ideally against a sheltered, south or south-west facing wall, which helps ripen the fruits. It thrives in organically rich, moist but well-drained soil, tolerating a range of pH from neutral to alkaline, including chalk, loam, sand, or clay. To encourage fruiting over leafy growth, it’s beneficial to restrict the roots, either by growing in a large container or by lining a planting pit with paving slabs. This cultivar is hardy throughout most of the UK (RHS H4), tolerating temperatures down to -10°C to -5°C, but may appreciate some winter protection in colder regions or when grown in pots.

Pruning is best done in early to mid-spring (March/April) to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and to maintain an open framework. In early summer, pinch back new growth to five or six leaves to encourage the formation of embryonic fruitlets for the following year’s harvest. The main crop of delicious, sweet, brownish-purple figs with rich red or pink-amber flesh ripens from late August to September, often continuing into October in warmer summers. Beyond its fruit, ‘Brown Turkey’ makes a wonderful architectural plant with its tropical-looking foliage and interesting winter branch structure. It pairs beautifully with other Mediterranean plants such as lavender, rosemary, and oregano, which also appreciate similar sunny, well-drained conditions.
