Clematis montana grandiflora

Clematis montana var. grandiflora is a truly magnificent deciduous climber, renowned for its sheer vigour and the breathtaking abundance of its blooms. From late spring, this exceptional clematis becomes absolutely smothered in single, pristine white flowers, each adorned with a bright yellow centre and carrying a lovely, delicate fragrance. We’ve seen it transform the plainest of structures into a cascading waterfall of white, and it reliably brushes off common clematis ailments, making it a robust and rewarding choice for any garden.

To get the very best from your ‘Grandiflora’, we recommend planting it in a moist, well-drained soil that’s moderately fertile. While it thrives in full sun, like many clematis, it appreciates having its ‘feet in the shade’ – keeping the roots cool and moist with a layer of pebbles or by planting low-growing perennials around its base. It’s fully hardy across the UK and will appreciate strong support to clamber up, such as a sturdy pergola, trellis, or even an old tree. Ensure you plant the crown about 5-8cm deep to encourage strong growth from below ground level.

This Group 1 clematis requires very little routine pruning, making it wonderfully low-maintenance. Its main flush of bloom is a spectacular highlight in late spring to early summer, after which it can occasionally offer further sporadic flowers. As the season progresses, attractive fluffy seed heads add continued interest.
