Clematis ‘Henryi’

Clematis ‘Henryi’ is a venerable English variety, cherished since the late 1800s for its timeless elegance and robust performance in the garden. This showy, large-flowered clematis is a vigorous deciduous climber, producing an abundance of impressive, star-shaped blooms, often 6-8 inches across. We particularly love the clean, creamy white petals which are beautifully contrasted by distinctive purplish-brown anthers, creating a real focal point in any setting. It’s a remarkably free-flowering plant, attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to the garden, and we’ve observed it to be both cold hardy and disease resistant, making it a reliable choice for UK gardens.

For optimal growth, Clematis ‘Henryi’ thrives in fertile, medium-moisture, well-drained soil. The classic clematis adage, ‘feet in the shade, head in the sun,’ holds true here; ensure the foliage receives full sun to partial shade (at least 6 hours of sunlight for best blooms), while the roots are kept cool and shaded, ideally by low-growing shrubs or a generous layer of mulch. It appreciates consistently moist soil during the growing season, though never waterlogged, and benefits from a balanced fertiliser in spring, with repeat applications every 4-6 weeks. This variety is also known for its resistance to deer and black walnut.

As a Group 2 clematis, ‘Henryi’ flowers on both old and new wood, offering two main flushes of blooms. A moderate prune in late winter or early spring helps remove any dead or weak stems, encouraging strong new growth. Following its initial summer bloom, a lighter prune will often stimulate a second wave of flowers later in the season. Its twining nature makes it ideal for training up trellises, arbours, posts, or fences, adding wonderful vertical interest.
