Product information

Clematis montana ‘Elizabeth’ is a remarkably robust and free-flowering deciduous climber, a long-standing favourite here at Tandee Nursery, and for very good reason. It bursts into life in late spring with an incredible profusion of single, pale pink flowers, each with a delicate satin sheen and a sweet, vanilla-like fragrance that truly fills the air. The young foliage emerges with an attractive bronze tint, providing an extra layer of interest before maturing to a fresh mid-green, and we’ve observed its exceptional vigour year after year.

For best results, we recommend planting ‘Elizabeth’ in a sunny to partially shaded spot, ensuring its roots remain cool and moist – perhaps by planting some low-growing perennials at its base or adding a layer of pebbles. It thrives in moist but well-drained, fertile soil, tolerating a range of soil types from neutral to alkaline. This hardy clematis is generally unfussy once established, making it a reliable choice for most UK gardens.

As a Pruning Group 1 clematis, ‘Elizabeth’ requires minimal pruning. We advise simply tidying it up immediately after its main flush of flowers in early summer, removing any dead, weak, or congested growth to maintain its shape and vigour. Its impressive height makes it perfect for adorning large walls, pergolas, arbours, or even scrambling through established trees, bringing a cascade of scented blooms to otherwise bare structures. It pairs beautifully with later-flowering climbers like roses or wisteria, extending the season of interest.
