Clematis ‘Manju’

Clematis ‘Manju’ is a real showstopper, a unique Japanese hybrid that we’ve been delighted to grow here at Tandee Nursery. Its most captivating feature is undoubtedly its abundant, multi-layered flowers, which resemble miniature cactus dahlias or elegant pompoms. They begin as intriguing pale green buds, gradually unfurling to reveal exquisite creamy-white petals with those charming green tips that give them such a fresh, sophisticated look. It’s a vigorous and healthy climber that truly stands out, offering a continuous display of these fascinating blooms over many months.

This delightful clematis is surprisingly unfussy, thriving in a position from full sun to partial shade, though like most clematis, it prefers its ‘feet in the shade’ – meaning cooler, moist soil around its roots. We always recommend planting it a little deeper than it was in its pot, about 7.5cm (3 inches) below soil level, to encourage a strong, multi-stemmed plant. It performs best in fertile, well-drained soil, enriched with plenty of organic matter. Once established, it’s quite hardy, enduring typical UK winters with ease, generally down to around -15°C.

As a Pruning Group 3 clematis, ‘Manju’ flowers on new growth, making its care wonderfully straightforward. We advise a hard prune in late winter or early spring, cutting all stems back to a pair of healthy buds about 20-30cm (8-12 inches) above ground level. This encourages a profusion of new shoots and a magnificent display of flowers from late spring right through to autumn. Its moderate stature makes it ideal for combining with climbing roses, scrambling through shrubs, or gracing an obelisk in a mixed border. For container growing, ensure a large pot with good drainage and a sturdy support.
