Product information

Clematis ‘Piilu’ is a magnificent large-flowered clematis, originating from Estonia, and truly lives up to its name which means ‘Little Duckling’. What makes this cultivar so special is its remarkable ability to produce an abundance of beautiful blooms, often covering the vine from top to bottom, rather than just at the top. We’ve observed its vigorous yet compact growth habit, making it a fantastic choice for many garden situations, and it’s consistently one of our heaviest-blooming varieties, bringing joy throughout the season.

For optimal performance, Clematis ‘Piilu’ thrives in fertile, moist, and well-drained soil, ideally neutral to slightly alkaline. It appreciates a spot in full sun to partial shade, with the classic clematis preference for its ‘head in the sun and feet in the shade’ – keeping the roots cool and shaded is key, perhaps with a layer of mulch or a low-growing plant at its base. Water regularly and deeply during its establishment and dry spells, but always ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging. This hardy vine is deciduous and will reliably return year after year.

This Group 2 clematis offers two distinct flushes of flowers, with the first, often double or semi-double, appearing on old wood in late spring, followed by single blooms on new growth later in summer. To encourage this continuous display, we recommend a light prune in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or weak stems, and then a second light prune after the first flush of flowers to promote new growth and subsequent blooms. Its moderate height makes it ideal for trellises, obelisks, or meandering through shrubs, and it’s particularly well-suited for containers where its abundant flowers can be admired close up.
