Product information
‘Okame’ is a brilliantly early flowering cherry, bred by Captain Collingwood Ingram in 1930. Masses of radiant pink single flowers with purple-red centres open before the leaves in March, often the first flowering cherry in the garden and a real lift in late winter.
Small deciduous tree with an upright vase-shaped habit when young, becoming more rounded with age, reaching 5 to 8m tall. Leaves follow the flowers, turning warm peachy-yellow and flushed red in autumn. Holds RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Minimal pruning, and only in midsummer to reduce silver leaf risk.
A proper specimen tree for a small front garden, a lawn corner, or anywhere very early spring blossom is welcome.
