Product information

We’ve always found space for Cannas on the nursery; their large, paddle-like leaves create a fantastic tropical feel. The foliage can be green, bronze, or even patterned, providing interest long before the showy flowers appear in shades of red, orange, or yellow. They really come into their own in late summer and autumn, continuing to flower until the first frosts.

Cannas are vigorous growers, with some varieties reaching up to 1.8 metres tall. They grow from underground stems called rhizomes and thrive in a sunny, sheltered spot in moist, fertile soil. They are hungry plants, so adding plenty of well-rotted manure or compost when planting will give them a great start.

To keep the flowers coming, remove spent flower spikes. Cannas are tender and not reliably hardy in most of the UK. After the first frost blackens the leaves, cut the stems back and lift the rhizomes to store in a dry, frost-free place like a shed for the winter.

Pruning
Deadhead to encourage continued flowering. When a flower spike has no more buds, prune it down to the next side shoot where a secondary flower spike should develop. Cut stems back after the first frost has damaged the foliage.
Seasonal Spring
Shoots emerge from rhizomes, which can be started in pots indoors from March or April before planting out after the risk of frost has passed.
Seasonal Summer
Produces bold, paddle-like leaves and showy flowers from mid-summer. Plants grow quickly in the warm weather.
Seasonal Autumn
Continues to flower until the first frosts. Foliage is killed by the cold, at which point the rhizomes should be lifted for winter storage.
Seasonal Winter
The rhizomes are stored dormant in a cool, dry, and frost-free location.
