‘Charles Ross’ is a classic heritage English apple raised at Newbury in 1890, a cross between Peasgood’s Nonsuch and Cox’s Orange Pippin. Large handsome fruits with red flushing and striping over yellow-green skin, firm crisp aromatic flesh, equally good eaten fresh or cooked.
Reliable productive tree, fruits ripen in October and keep until December. Pretty white blossom in April. Partially self-fertile with better cropping from a compatible pollination partner. Tolerant of poorer and chalkier soils than many apples.
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Winter-prune for framework.
A proper heritage choice for a kitchen garden, an orchard, or as a trained form on a sunny wall.
