Product information

We’re very fond of this one on the nursery for its striking spring display. Prunus ‘Chocolate Ice’ offers a fantastic contrast when its large, single white flowers, with a hint of blush, open against the emerging deep chocolate-brown foliage. As the season progresses, the leaves mature to a dark green, before turning to vivid shades of orange and red in the autumn.

This is a small, deciduous tree, initially growing with an upright habit that becomes more spreading as it matures. Expect it to reach about 4 metres in height and spread after 20 years. It performs best in full sun to get the best blossom and autumn colour, and will happily grow in most well-drained, fertile soils.

Keep the soil moist after planting until it’s well-established. Pruning is minimal; just remove any damaged or crossing branches in summer after the flowering has finished to reduce the risk of disease. It’s a superb choice for a specimen tree in a lawn or a mixed border.
