‘Amistad’ is a salvia that really earns its keep. Profuse, large deep-purple tubular flowers sit in striking near-black calyces, held on upright stems well above the foliage. Flowering runs from early summer right through to the first frosts.
It’s a bushy, upright perennial, reaching around 1.2 metres with a 0.5 metre spread. The aromatic, slightly downy, bright green leaves are corrugated with pointed tips.
Full sun in moist but well-drained soil. Borderline hardy in the UK — best in a sheltered spot, or grown in a large pot that can be moved undercover for the coldest weeks. A firm favourite with bees and hummingbird moths.
