Wisteria floribunda ‘Shiro-noda’

This is a truly enchanting Japanese Wisteria we’ve grown to adore, an old Japanese cultivar known for its exceptional beauty and slightly later flowering period, which can offer some protection from late frosts. ‘Shiro-noda’ is a vigorous, deciduous climber, famed for producing the longest flower racemes of any wisteria, reaching up to 60cm (24in) or more. Its abundant, pea-like pure white blooms, often with a delicate scent, create a dramatic and romantic spectacle in the garden. We’ve observed that it attracts a wonderful array of bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to a wildlife-friendly space.

To thrive, ‘Shiro-noda’ prefers a position in full sun, though it will tolerate light or open shade, ideally in a sheltered spot. It performs best in moderately fertile, moist, and well-drained soil, ideally slightly acidic to neutral. While established plants are fairly drought tolerant, we recommend regular watering in dry periods, especially for those in pots or during the growing season. This variety is fully hardy, generally suitable for USDA Zones 5-9, meaning it can withstand typical UK winters. It’s also noted for being deer resistant.

Regular pruning is key to encouraging abundant flowering and managing its vigorous growth. We recommend a two-stage approach: a summer prune after flowering to shorten the current year’s whippy growth, and a winter prune to further reduce these shoots to flowering spurs. This magnificent climber requires a very sturdy support structure, such as a strong pergola, arbour, or stout horizontal wires on a wall, to bear the weight of its mature stems and spectacular blooms. Its light green foliage reliably turns a beautiful golden yellow in autumn, adding another season of interest before the leaves fall. We love to see it cascading over an archway or as a free-standing standard, creating a truly romantic focal point in any garden.
