Dicentra formosa spectabilis

Lamprocapnos spectabilis (formerly Dicentra spectabilis) is the classic bleeding heart, one of the most distinctive cottage-garden plants. Arching stems carry rows of heart-shaped locket-like flowers in pink with a protruding white petal, dangling from the stems in late spring and early summer. Holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit.

The ferny soft green divided foliage dies back in summer after flowering, so companion plants that come up later are helpful to fill the gap.

Plant in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial shade. Sheltered from cold drying winds. Mulch to keep roots cool and moist. Long-lived once settled.

A firm favourite for a woodland-edge border, a shady cottage scheme, or alongside hostas and ferns in a damp shade bed.
