Product information

Prunus serrula is the cherry that gets grown mostly for its bark. The trunk has a shining coppery-brown skin that peels in thin horizontal bands, catching the light in a way no other ornamental cherry can match.

Round-headed and deciduous, reaching around 10 metres over time. Small bowl-shaped white flowers, 2cm across, appear in small clusters as the leaves emerge in spring. Narrow leaves turn yellow in autumn. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Full sun in moist but well-drained soil. Plant it where the winter sun will strike the trunk — the bark really earns its keep when everything else is dormant.
