Product information
‘Black Pearls’ is an astilbe bred for foliage as much as flower. The divided leaves are exceptionally dark green, among the darkest of any astilbe, and in mid to late summer dense plumes of deep purple-black florets with blueish hints rise above the clump.
Plants reach around 50 to 60cm in flower, with an upright habit that expands slowly through rhizomes. Each plume carries hundreds of tiny flowers opening in succession, giving a long display.
Plant in rich, well-draining, consistently moist soil in partial to full shade. Regular watering is essential, this one won’t tolerate drought. Divide clumps every few years to keep plants vigorous.
A proper drama-plant for a damp shady border, alongside hostas and ferns, or massed where the dark foliage and deep plumes can really count.
