Product information

This is a real showstopper for a sunny, sheltered spot, giving a fantastic display of colour all summer long. The actual flowers are tiny and white, but they’re surrounded by the large, papery bracts that provide the explosion of mixed colour. We find they bring a brilliant Mediterranean feel to the nursery’s display houses.

Bougainvillea are vigorous climbers, but ‘Dania’ is a more compact form, typically reaching around 2 metres if left unchecked. They need plenty of sun to flower well and prefer a well-drained, loam-based compost. In most of the UK, they are best grown in large containers that can be moved into a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory for the winter.

Water regularly in summer, but let the compost dry out a little between waterings. Feed with a high-potash fertiliser, like a tomato feed, every couple of weeks during the growing season to encourage more flowers. Prune in late winter or early spring to tidy the plant and encourage fresh growth for the season ahead.

Pruning
Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Cut back flowering stems by about half to encourage a second flush of bracts in late summer.
Seasonal Spring
Growth begins in earnest. Increase watering as new leaves appear. Start feeding with a nitrogen-rich feed, switching to high-potash once flower bracts show colour.
Seasonal Summer
The main flowering season, with a profusion of colourful bracts. Water regularly, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Needs at least 6 hours of sun a day to flower well.
Seasonal Autumn
Flowering continues into autumn. Reduce watering and stop feeding as the weather cools and growth slows down. Move indoors to a frost-free location before the first frosts.
Seasonal Winter
Keep in a frost-free place like a conservatory or cool greenhouse with a minimum temperature of 7-10°C. Water only occasionally when the soil is dry. The plant may drop its leaves.
