Lonicera henryi

Lonicera henryi is one of those wonderfully dependable climbing plants we always recommend for its robust nature and enduring appeal. Unlike some honeysuckles, it maintains its handsome, glossy, deep green foliage throughout most of the winter, providing valuable year-round structure and screening in the garden. Its charming tubular flowers, a delightful mix of purple-red on the outside with warm yellow throats, emerge in clusters, creating a subtle yet sophisticated display. We particularly appreciate its vigorous but non-invasive twining habit, which allows it to establish quickly without becoming unruly.

For the best performance, we suggest planting Lonicera henryi in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade; while it tolerates full sun, a little afternoon shade is often appreciated, especially for keeping its roots cool and moist. It thrives in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, adapting well to a range of soil types from sandy to clay. This hardy climber is well-suited to the UK climate, capable of withstanding temperatures down to -15°C (H5 hardiness rating). Once established, it can tolerate moderate drought, but consistent moisture will ensure a more luxuriant display.

As a later-flowering honeysuckle, Lonicera henryi doesn’t require rigorous annual pruning. We recommend a light tidy in early spring, removing any dead, damaged, or congested shoots and shortening any overly long stems to maintain its desired shape and size. In summer, the distinctive purple-red and yellow flowers are a highlight, attracting hummingbirds and bees. These are followed in autumn by attractive blue-black berries, which are a welcome food source for songbirds, extending its seasonal interest. Its evergreen nature means it continues to provide a lush backdrop even in the depths of winter, making it a fantastic choice for year-round garden enjoyment. Just a note of caution, the berries are ornamental and not for consumption.
