Elaeagnus × ebbingei ‘Viveleg’

‘Viveleg’ is a vigorous variegated elaeagnus, discovered as a natural sport in France. The large leathery glossy leaves carry a deep green centre framed by bold irregular yellow margins, with a matt silver underside that catches the breeze.

Small creamy-white flowers hide among the foliage in autumn, with a surprisingly strong sweet fragrance, followed by orange berries through winter. Fast-growing to around 2 to 2.5m tall and 1.5 to 2m wide.

Plant in full sun to partial shade in any reasonable soil. Drought-tolerant, disease-resistant, and very tolerant of coastal conditions, pollution and dry sites. Clip in late spring for hedging.

A cracking fast screening plant, variegated privacy hedge, or brightening evergreen in a mixed border.
