‘Bonica’ is one of the most reliable modern shrub roses, bred by Meilland in the 1980s and still one of the best garden performers. Clusters of soft rose-pink semi-double flowers open over glossy mid-green foliage from early summer right through to first frosts, sometimes with a light scent.
Plants make a bushy rounded shrub around 1m tall and wide. Very disease-resistant, self-cleaning (spent flowers drop naturally), and a reliable repeat-flowerer. Holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Feed in spring, mulch, deadhead through summer, and prune in late winter to around a third of their height.
A firm favourite for a cottage-garden border, a low rose hedge, or a reliable landscape rose in a mixed scheme.
