Rose ‘Tequila Sunrise’

Rose ‘Tequila Sunrise’ is one of those plants we love to see in the nursery beds, catching everyone’s eye. The flowers are the main event, with large, double blooms of a rich golden-yellow, their petals heavily tipped with a vibrant scarlet red that deepens with age. They keep coming from early summer right through into the autumn, set against glossy, dark green leaves that have a hint of bronze when young.

This is a vigorous and bushy hybrid tea rose, forming an upright shrub that typically reaches about 0.75 to 0.8 metres in height. It has a tidy, compact habit. For the best flowers, plant it in full sun in any well-drained, fertile soil. Good air circulation will also help keep it healthy. We’ve found it to be a reliable performer on our Thurning ground, with good disease resistance.

A bit of care goes a long way. Feed with a rose fertiliser in spring and deadhead the spent flowers regularly to encourage more to follow. Prune it back in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and encourage strong new growth for the season ahead. It’s a classic choice for a mixed border, adding a splash of warm colour, and its compact size makes it ideal for a large container on the patio.
