Product information
‘Splendens’ is one of the best bottlebrushes, with bright scarlet-red flower spikes carrying prominent gold-tipped stamens through summer, and often a second flush in autumn if the plant is tidied after the first round. The narrow leaves are lemon-scented when crushed.
It forms an upright bushy shrub to around 1.5 to 2m tall and wide, with red-flushed new growth adding another layer of colour. Bees and butterflies work the flowers hard.
Plant in full sun in well-drained, non-alkaline soil. Hardy to around minus 5, so give it a sheltered spot against a warm wall or grow it in a container you can move to shelter if needed. Trim lightly after flowering.
A cracking statement plant for a sunny courtyard, Mediterranean-style border, or a large container on a south-facing patio.
