Prunus nipponica kurilensis ‘Brilliant’

This is one of those trees that really signals the start of spring for us here at the nursery. Before the leaves appear, its slender branches are covered in masses of single, soft pinkish-white flowers, which are a welcome sight for early bees. The leaves that follow open out with a bronze tint, maturing to a simple green through summer.

It’s a small, bushy tree with a dense, upright habit, making it a great choice where space is a consideration. Over 10 to 20 years, you can expect it to reach a height of around 2.5 to 4 metres. It’s happiest in full sun and moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Try to avoid very damp sites.

There’s very little pruning needed; just remove any damaged or crossing branches after it has flowered to keep a good shape. The show isn’t over after spring, as the autumn foliage gives a final burst of fiery oranges and reds. It’s a superb, low-maintenance tree for a courtyard or a mixed border where its seasonal changes can be appreciated.
