Euonymus japonicus ‘Aureus’

‘Aureus’ is one of the brightest evergreens we grow. The glossy leaves are dark green with bold golden-yellow centres, which really lift a border or doorstep pot, especially in winter when most things have gone quiet.

It forms a dense, upright shrub to around 2m tall and a bit less wide. Occasional plain green or plain yellow shoots can appear, which you can snip out to keep the variegation consistent.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. The gold colour is brightest in sun. Tolerates coastal conditions and urban air well, and takes clipping if you want to use it as a low hedge or a clipped shape.

A firm favourite for winter interest, a low hedge, or a container by the front door.
