Product information
We’ve always found space for a lilac standard on the nursery; they’re a fantastic way to bring that classic lilac scent right up to nose-level. In late spring, the dense, rounded head is covered in conical clusters of flowers, filling the air with a sweet, unmistakable perfume that the bees adore. The leaves are typically a fresh, heart-shape, providing a simple green backdrop through summer.
A standard lilac will typically form a head of foliage and flowers atop a clear stem, reaching a manageable height that works well in smaller gardens. They are quite content in most fertile, well-drained soils, but perform best in neutral to alkaline conditions. For the most impressive flower display, be sure to plant it in a spot that receives plenty of direct sun for at least half the day.
These are hardy and generally low-maintenance plants. The main job is to prune the flowering head immediately after the flowers have faded to encourage a good show the following year. A standard lilac looks wonderful as a focal point in a lawn, in pairs flanking a path, or adding structure and scent to a mixed border.
