Product information

This elder stands out with its dark purple-black leaves, deeply cut into fine lace-like segments. The foliage keeps its colour all season. From late spring, large flat heads of tiny creamy-pink flowers draw pollinators. Later, black berries follow for birds.

Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’ grows to 2-3m tall and wide. It forms a rounded, bushy habit. Plant in any moist but well-drained soil. Full sun gives best leaf colour, but it copes with partial shade. From our Thurning nursery fields, these thrive in most UK gardens.

Prune hard in spring for fresh foliage. Cut back to base or shape as needed. It suits mixed borders, back of beds, or wild areas. Drought tolerant once established. Good for hedging too.
