Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea ‘Harlequin’

Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea ‘Harlequin’ brings reliable colour with its deep purple-red leaves. The foliage emerges bright red in spring, matures to dark purple through summer. Small yellow flowers appear in clusters during late spring. These attract early pollinators to our Thurning nursery borders.

This compact shrub grows to 1-1.5m tall and wide. It forms a rounded, dense habit. Plant in any well-drained soil. Full sun delivers the best purple colour. It copes with partial shade too. Drought tolerant once established.

Prune lightly after flowering to shape. It suits mixed borders, low hedges or containers. Tough against pests. We’ve grown this for years at Tandee & Van den Berk Nurseries. Pairs well with silver or gold plants.
