Product information
This Japanese Maple is a staple in our Peterborough nursery for its reliable, deep burgundy foliage. The five-lobed leaves emerge with a translucent quality in spring and hold their rich colour well into the summer months. It provides a sophisticated backdrop for lighter green shrubs or silver-leaved perennials.
Expect a slow to moderate growth rate, eventually forming a rounded, bushy tree reaching up to 8 metres. It thrives in moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. While it handles full sun, we often suggest a spot with dappled shade to protect the delicate leaf tips from drying out in the wind.
Pruning is rarely needed beyond removing dead wood in late winter while the tree is dormant. We find it performs best in a sheltered position away from harsh easterly winds. It is an excellent choice for a woodland garden or as a standalone feature near a patio where the light can catch the leaves.
