Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’

Deep purple-red foliage defines this classic Japanese maple, which keeps its rich colour better than most through the summer. It makes a superb focal point in a sheltered border or a large container.

Product information

‘Bloodgood’ is perhaps the most famous red-leaved Japanese maple for a reason. Its deeply lobed, palmate leaves emerge a dark burgundy in spring and maintain that intensity even during the height of summer. We often see customers drawn to its architectural shape when walking through our specimen tree area.

This cultivar typically reaches a height and spread of around 5 metres over twenty years. It prefers a spot sheltered from cold winds, which can scorch the delicate leaf tips. While it grows well in full sun or partial shade, a slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soil will produce the healthiest growth.

Pruning is rarely needed, though you can remove crossing branches in late autumn or mid-winter while the tree is dormant. It sits comfortably in a woodland garden or as a standalone feature in a smaller urban space. We recommend mulching annually to keep the roots cool and moist, which helps prevent leaf scorch during dry spells.
