Product information

This is the only maple native to the UK. It is a staple in our Thurning ground for its resilience and reliable performance. The foliage is dark green and deeply lobed, turning a clear, buttery yellow in the autumn. Older specimens develop a rugged, corky bark that adds texture to the winter landscape. It is a practical choice for supporting local biodiversity, as the flowers provide nectar for bees and the seeds feed small mammals.

It typically grows at a moderate rate, eventually reaching a height of around 15 metres if left as a tree. The habit is naturally rounded and dense. It is remarkably unfussy about its environment, thriving in most soil types including heavy clay and thin chalk. While it prefers full sun, it handles partial shade well. It also stands up to wind and air pollution better than many other deciduous trees.

We often recommend this for traditional mixed hedging. It responds very well to regular clipping, which keeps the growth tight and manageable. If you are growing it as a standalone tree, very little maintenance is required beyond removing crossing branches. Avoid pruning in late spring when the sap is rising to prevent bleeding. It fits naturally into woodland edges or as a sturdy screen for privacy.
