Magnolia × loebneri ‘Merril’

‘Merrill’ is one of the most reliable magnolias for early spring impact. Fragrant white flowers, up to 10cm across with around 15 broad tepals, open before the leaves — initially goblet-shaped, then opening fully to a star. A faint pink blush at the base of the tepals adds a softer note.

A vigorous deciduous tree reaching around 10 metres over time. Starts flowering young, so you don’t have the long wait that some magnolias need. Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Plant in full sun or partial shade, in moist but well-drained soil. Prefers neutral to acid conditions. A superb solo specimen on a lawn, or the focal point of a front garden.
