Ilex crenata ‘Jenny’

‘Jenny’ is one of the most reliable Ilex crenata cultivars, and it’s become a go-to box alternative thanks to its fine texture and total immunity to box blight. The small glossy dark green leaves look very similar to box close up, but this plant stays trouble-free.

It has a dense upright habit and takes clipping beautifully, eventually reaching around 1 to 1.5m if left unclipped. Clips to any shape you like, from low formal hedges to balls and cones.

Plant in moist, acidic to neutral, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. A little ericaceous compost at planting helps it settle. Clip two or three times a year for formal hedges, less for a softer shape.

A firm favourite for box-replacement hedging, clipped topiary balls in pots, or low structural edging along a path.
