Product information
This compact evergreen shrub is valued as much for its ornamental buds as its flowers. The deep crimson buds form in autumn and remain decorative throughout winter, finally opening to sweetly scented white blooms in spring. It’s a real talking point from November through April.
Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ grows slowly to around 1.5 metres tall and wide, with a dense, rounded habit. It prefers partial shade to full shade and thrives in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Unlike some skimmias, this cultivar is male, so it won’t produce the bright red berries of female forms, but the winter buds more than compensate.
Minimal pruning is needed; just remove any dead wood or crossing stems in spring. It’s ideal for shaded corners, woodland gardens, and large containers where its winter interest can be appreciated up close. Pairs well with hellebores and winter-flowering heathers.
