‘Elstar’ is a modern Dutch-bred dessert apple raised in the 1950s, a cross of Golden Delicious and Ingrid Marie. Medium-sized fruits ripen bright yellow heavily flushed and striped red, with crisp juicy cream-yellow flesh and a properly balanced sweet-sharp aromatic flavour.
Heavy cropper, ripens in September-October. Partially self-fertile, cropping improves with a compatible pollination partner. Good disease resistance.
Plant in full sun in fertile well-drained soil. Winter-prune for framework, summer-prune trained forms.
A firm favourite for kitchen gardens, family orchards, and trained forms on walls.
