Product information
‘Gala’ is one of the most popular modern dessert apples, bred in New Zealand in the 1930s from Kidd’s Orange Red and Golden Delicious. Fruits are medium-sized, yellow with attractive red striping, with crisp juicy yellow-white flesh and a sweet vanilla-honey flavour.
Trees are reliable, productive and crop from a young age. Fruits ripen in September-October and store well for a few months. A good pollinator for many other apples.
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Not self-fertile, so plant with a suitable pollination partner. Prune in winter for framework, summer-prune trained forms.
A firm favourite for a family kitchen garden, an orchard, or trained as an espalier on a sunny wall.
