Product information
‘Howgate Wonder’ is a famous cooking apple raised on the Isle of Wight in 1915, known for producing some of the largest fruits of any apple variety. Huge fruits ripen greenish-yellow flushed and striped with red, holding firm sharp flesh that cooks to a lightly fluffy texture, brilliant for pies, crumbles and baked apples.
Heavy cropper, with individual fruits often 500g to 1kg or more. Ripens in October and stores well into January. Partially self-fertile, cropping improves with a compatible pollination partner.
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Prune in winter for framework. Thin fruits in early summer to avoid biennial cropping and encourage regular large crops.
A firm favourite for kitchen gardens, show bench apples, and anyone who wants proper showpiece fruit.
