Product information
‘Spartan’ is a Canadian-bred dessert apple raised in British Columbia in the 1920s, crossing McIntosh with Newtown Pippin. Medium-sized fruits develop an attractive deep maroon-purple skin with almost waxy bloom, crisp white flesh, and a sweet vinous flavour with McIntosh-like aromatics.
Heavy, reliable cropper, ripening in October. Good disease resistance and fairly tolerant of cold. Great eating straight off the tree, or in the lunchbox.
Plant in full sun in fertile well-drained soil. Partially self-fertile, cropping improves with a suitable pollination partner. Prune in winter for framework, summer-prune trained forms.
A firm favourite for a family orchard, a kitchen garden, or a trained espalier.
